During a time when we are all trying to keep a little more cash in the bank, Mystery Shopping sounds like the perfect way to bring in a little extra income… right?

The promise of getting paid to shop and dine while providing valuable feedback seems like a dream come true. However, not all that glitters is gold. Unfortunately, not even the world of mystery shopping is immune to scams. In this blog post, we’ll guide you through the red flags and strategies to spot mystery shopper job scams before you fall victim to fraudulent schemes.

    Research Legitimate Companies:

Before diving into the world of mystery shopping, take the time to research reputable companies. Legitimate mystery shopping firms are registered with industry associations like the Mystery Shopping Professionals Association (MSPA). Check their website, reviews, and ratings to ensure their credibility.

    Never Pay to Work:

One of the most significant indicators of a mystery shopping scam is the request for payment upfront. Legitimate mystery shopping opportunities will never ask you to pay to access jobs. Be cautious of any program or company demanding registration fees, training costs, or other payments.

However, it is important to note that temporary charges such as item, food and ticket expenses are commonly required in order for you to complete the mystery shop correctly. It should be clearly communicated to you when you should receive reimbursement for these charges along with payment for the assignment its self.

    Check for Contact Information:

Legitimate mystery shopping companies will have clear and accessible contact information. Scammers often hide behind anonymity, making it challenging to reach them. Verify the company’s physical address, phone number, and email address before proceeding.

Cross-verify the contact information provided by the company through multiple sources. Look for consistency in addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses. Inconsistencies may be a sign of a scam.

    Social Media Presence:

Legitimate companies often have a social media presence. Check the company’s profiles on platforms like LinkedIn, Facebook, or Instagram. A strong online presence, along with positive interactions and reviews, can be indicative of a trustworthy mystery shopping entity.

While mystery shopping can be a legitimate and enjoyable way to earn extra income, it’s essential to approach it with caution. By staying informed and vigilant, you can protect yourself from falling victim to mystery shopper job scams. Remember to research companies, avoid upfront payments, and trust your instincts. If an opportunity seems too good to be true, it probably is. Stay safe and happy shopping!
