    Secret shopper, mystery shopper – whichever you choose to call it, it’s the same thing. It can often be shrouded in a bit of mystery when, in fact, its purpose is simple but powerful; for businesses to thrive, they need customer feedback. Feedback from independent sources like Mystery Shoppers is the best way to see things in perspective and understand how to improve the customer experience. It’s as simple as that! Pretty good, right?

    What assignments you get to complete will depend on the type of business we match you to, and what it is the company wants to know about. You might be hitting the gym or enjoying a double shot, spiced goat milk chai latte (no judgement here, whatever tickles your fancy). Perhaps you could be checking the new student digs out in town, or even seeing how approachable and helpful the staff at your local care home are. Ultimately, your job is to help our clients give the best possible service they can by experiencing first-hand the service they deliver. All you need to do is apply for the shops you’d like.

    If this sounds like something you’d enjoy, you simply need to register and we’ll help you get set up with everything you need to know – starting with our registration and sign up process. You’ll then be able to access your own dashboard showing all the Open Opportunities we have available before choosing which one to apply for. We review all applications (a bit like a typical job application but a lot less scary) to make sure we match the right Mystery Shopper to the right assignment.

    We care about all of our shoppers. As a Pro’ Mystery Shopper you’ll get useful resources like the Shoppers Academy and a personal point of contact in our team, we will also help to improve your skills as a Mystery Shopper with feedback after every assignment. All of our shoppers have the chance to develop and along with that comes the opportunity to climb up the Mystery Shopping ladder and get access to even more fantastic work. You may even get to be a Platinum Shopper!

    Each ‘shopper fee’ varies on the assignment. You’ll be able to see the shopper fee on the assignment before applying as well as any reimbursement allowances for purchases required. Usually the longer the assignment takes you the higher the shopper fee will be.

    Let’s face it, as rewarding and fun as this is, it’s a job, and you should expect to get paid promptly. Our process is straightforward – every time you’ve completed a job with us, and the results have been submitted to our client, you’ll be paid into your account on the 15th of the month following the completed report. It couldn’t be easier.

    For some of our mystery shops, you will require a few bits of equipment which we will talk through with you if you need it. To make life easier, our online shop has everything you need in one place. Head to our shop here.

    Once your account is created, you’ll be able to see the Open Opportunities available to you. You can ‘apply’ for assignment that will then be assigned to you by your Regional Programme Coordinator. This assignment will have instructions/a brief and a prepopulated survey form that you’ll be able to fill within 24 hours of completing assignment.

    We know that sometimes life can get in the way and you may not be able to complete an assignment as planned. We ask that you let us know this by declining your assignment in your account. Please let us know the reason as it may be that we can come back to you next time or arrange another assignment date for you.

    All assignments have instructions/briefs written with them to let you know what is expected with this particular assignment. It’s also a great idea to read the survey form before conducting a visit or assignment so you know what you’re on the lookout for when going undercover.

    Most assignments are done in person as a customer, others can be over the phone or even digitally (email, live chat, social media). We have some clients that realise the benefit of being able to see the customer experience first-hand, this is done through the use of a covert camera. You’ll need to own your own covert camera equipment and wear it whilst conducting your customer journey. Really helpful for assisting you in remembering what happened when you have a video to turn to! We sell covert camera equipment so please contact your Regional Programme Coordinator for information once you’re registered.

    You can have many assignments in your inbox at any one time. It’s important that you still meet your visit and due dates and that your quality is tip-top(!). You’ll begin to become an experienced Mystery Shopper over time, build a relationship with the Proinsight team and hopefully have an awesome Shopper Grading to match. The greater quality mystery shopping assignments you complete the more likely your application is to be accepted for your next assignment.

    To become a Proinsight Mystery Shopper we need you to pass a short spelling, punctuation and grammar quiz. Just like being back at school (or in the pub!).


    Why do I need to do this?

    The surveys our Mystery Shoppers complete are used by our clients and their customer facing teams as training tools, so accuracy is vital.
    The quiz should take around 5 to 10 minutes and you need to get at least 80% of the answers right. Take your time, as you only have 2 shots at this.

    Our clients often like to recognise members of staff and reward them for their service. When completing your assignment we ask you to provide commentary about your experience, it’s important your write up is grammatically correct.
    Your comments are highly valued by our clients, which is why it’s really important to follow these key points:
    • All sentences should start with a capital letter and finish with a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark.
    • When quoting a comment made to you by a member of staff, the text should be put in inverted commas (speech marks).
    • When you are referring to specific place, brand or staff names please use capital letters at the start of the word.
    • When writing your comments please use complete sentences rather than short ‘note’ style comments.
    When describing a member of staff please provide the following information:

    • Name (where possible)
    • Gender (male or female)
    • Approximate height
    • Hair colour/length
    • Whether they were wearing glasses

    Please do not provide description that include Ethnicity, Age or Build as these can unwittingly cause offence.

    Below is a typical mystery shop brief. Please read it carefully, taking as much time as you need, after clicking ‘next’ you’ll be asked a series of questions about what you’ve read.
    Thank you for choosing to help Proinsight give feedback to this client on your experience as a customer. You will need to complete a telephone call using fake details to enquire about the cost of services for a family of 4.
    After completing the call you’ll need to conduct a mystery visit to enquire about a subscription for yourself using your real details, this is so the business can provide you with a follow up call within 6 hours.
    To be able to complete this mystery shop you must be between the age of 34 and 65, have a full driver’s license and at least 1 child.
    Once you’ve completed your visit and leave the building you must take a photo of the front of the location ensuring the opening times poster is in the shot.
    You will need to write up and submit your report within 24 hours of completing your visit and no sooner than the 6 hours follow up window.
